What are the different counselling approaches used at Clear Mind Counselling?
Client Centred Therapy- a system of psychotherapy based on the assumption that the patient has the internal resources to improve and is in the best position to resolve his or her own personality dysfunction.
A nondirective method of psychotherapy, originated by Carl Rogers, in which the therapist's role is to listen to and then reflect or restate without judgment or interpretation the words of the client. The goal of the therapy is personal growth achieved by the client's increased awareness and understanding of his or her attitudes, feelings, and behavior.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy- CBT- an action-oriented form of psychosocial therapy that assumes that maladaptive, or faulty, thinking patterns cause maladaptive behavior and "negative" emotions. (Maladaptive behavior is behavior that is counter-productive or interferes with everyday living.) The treatment focuses on changing an individual's thoughts (cognitive patterns) in order to change his or her behavior and emotional state.
Solution Focused Brief Therapy- SFBT- focuses on what clients want to achieve through therapy rather than on historical problem(s) that made them seek help. The approach focuses on the past only in order to activate conversations about resources and past successes. Predominantly, it purposefully activates and focuses conversations on the present and future. The therapist/counsellor uses respectful curiosity to invite the client to envision their preferred future. Then therapist and client start attending to any moves that direction, whether these be small increments or larger changes. To support this, questions are asked about the client’s story, strengths and resources; and especially, about any exceptions to client-perceived problems.
Solution focused therapists believe personal change is already constant. By helping people identify positive directions for change in their life and to attend to changes currently in process they wish to continue, SFBT therapists help clients construct a concrete vision of a preferred future for themselves.
SFBT therapists support clients to identify times in their life when things matched more closely with the future they prefer. Differences and similarities between the two occasions are examined. By bringing small successes to awareness, and supporting clients to repeat their successful choices and behaviors, when the problem is not there or less severe, therapist facilitate client movement towards goals and preferred futures they have identified.
Emotion Focused Therpy- (EFT)- a proven effective technique of understanding the physiological, cognitive and emotional aspects behind symptoms and resolves maladaptive emotions in the present moment.
Emotions are seen as information providers, they tell us what is important and whether things are going our way, they are efficient, automatic signalling systems that involve us identifying our wishes and needs that subsequently lead us to adaptive action. Emotions help us integrate experience by giving meaning, value and direction.
In this framework therapists are viewed as Emotion coaches who work to enhance emotion-focused coping by helping people become aware of, accept and make sense of their emotional experience.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy- Mindfulness- ACT – Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) gets it's name from one of its core messages: accept what is out of your personal control, and commit to action that improves and enriches your life.
The aim of ACT is to maximise human potential for a rich, full and meaningful life. ACT (which is pronounced as the word 'act', not as the initials) does this by:
Teaching you psychological skills to deal with your painful thoughts and feelings effectively - in such a way that they have much less impact and influence over you (these are known as Mindfullness skills)
Helping you to clarify what is truly important and meaningful to you - i.e your values - then use that knowledge to guide, inspire and motivate you to change your life for the better
